Artwork for Scream Factory release of They Live, It was an honour to take this one on as a massive life long John Carpenter and Roddy Piper Fan. So it became a true labour of love on this juggernaut of social commentary meets sci-fi action.
I wanted to create something in a true 80s key art style, one of my favourite posters is the Italian poster for Escape from New york, so I wanted to create a spiritual companion piece to that with a big focus on Piper as this macho hero with pulsing muscles (he was wrestling hero), so I ripped his shirt sleeves off with and had him shooting his M16 from the hip as he’s straddling adversity of alien oppression. Not forgetting Keith David, the mans who survived The Thing! and a legend in his own right.
When it came to the aliens I wanted to convey a sense of claustrophobia so all the big corporate buildings and aliens are leering over the characters and bellow are the slums and church being raided. Colour was the big thing, which allowed me to separate out the elements to prevent it all getting too busy. The alien world is seen in monochrome, which I stylise slightly with a more blueish hue.
